I've set myself up with a training plan that adds 10 miles more distance each week and changes the elevation gains I get regularly. My first ride is a 30 mile ride on some very familiar roads that I ride often. Very little elevation gain so it is really just a matter of spinning on flat roads. The ride went well with a total of 36.44 miles in 2 hours 15 minutes, average speed of 16.1 mph (not trying to kill myself). I kept a pretty relative mid 70's cadence and kept my heart rate in check at 141 bpm average.
